Hello, my name is Benjamin Sunkyong Kim, a freelance photographer and visual artist based in New York City. I earned my BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in 2018.
Born in Tokyo to Korean parents who were studying abroad, my upbringing was defined by movement. Following my father’s career as a professor and scientist, we lived in Seoul before relocating to Golden, Colorado, in 2008. A pivotal shift occurred in 2009 when we moved to New York City, I have called Queens my home for over 15 years, though a part of me still deeply misses Seoul.
My creative perspectives are rooted in memory, mental illness, and family—elements embodied through a visual language of color, abstraction, and surrealism. As someone who has navigated personal struggles, expressing my unique vision is essential to how I perceive the world; it is my primary way of connecting and communicating with others. I have always sought a language of my own, and through my art, I find it.
I look forward to continuing this creative journey in New York, finding my own happiness in the process of sharing my vision and connecting with those who encounter my work.
